Welcome to the scented showcase! This is a new series in which I shine a light on a perfume hero of mine. There are so many wonderfully talented indie perfumers and creators out there and they truly deserve to be in the spotlight. The big corporations have boardrooms , billboards and buses, but the smaller brands have only their passion, and a big dream. In the words of Rodgers and Hammerstein, “You gotta have a dream; If you don’t have a dream, How you gonna have a dream come true?”. At the risk of sounding like a DJ at the end of a wedding disco, this one is for the dreamers out there. Our first guest is Karen Timson.
Karen Timson Fine Fragrance

Retired nurse, and self confessed petrol head, Karen Timson makes her fragrances by hand in her own home studio, packs them, and takes them to the Post Office herself. When she’s not doing that, she’s making (very good) home fragrance, working on new perfumes and teaching others the tricks of the trade. My personal favourites include Hera, Rosa de Rio, Côte Vermeille and the outstanding Moon Palace reed diffuser (it lasted MONTHS, I tell you!). Over to you, Karen.

What makes your brand special?
KT: I think it’s the emotional connection behind each fragrance and the fact there’s a real person behind it all. I create fragrances for people who want something individual and distinctive, and not something everyone else is wearing.
I’m really particular about quality too, so if I say a fragrance has certain notes in it, you’ll genuinely smell them. I want people to experience something memorable when they wear my perfumes.
A lot of people also like that my brand feels personal. When someone messages the business, they’re speaking to me. I’m the one making and hand filling the fragrances, packing the orders, and putting care into every detail. It’s not mass produced and there isn’t a big team behind the scenes, it’s very hands on and authentic, and I think people connect with that.
Sustainability is also really important to me. My packaging is recyclable, made from recycled materials, and even the tissue paper is printed using soy dye, because I believe quality and responsibility should go hand in hand.

What’s your bestseller?
KT: Pendragon is by far my best seller and has become one of the standout fragrances in the collection. Its bold character and lasting performance have really connected with customers, and it’s also gained attention through my motorsport team sponsorship, with the racing drivers and their support team wearing the fragrance trackside. However, when I launched it back in 2019 I naively ‘branded’ as a fragrance for men! Rookie error because folk will wear whatever they damn well like, so lesson learned!

What’s been your pinch-me moment highlight so far?
KT: I’d love to be greedy and have two!
The first has to be launching and running my perfume making workshops. They bring me so much joy. Seeing people connect with fragrance, trust their instincts, and create something uniquely theirs is incredibly fulfilling and reminds me why I started this journey in the first place.
The second is recently becoming a finalist in the Small Business Awards 2026. That was a real pinch-me moment. Building a niche fragrance brand independently takes a lot of determination, so to receive that recognition felt both humbling and deeply rewarding.
One feeds my creativity and love of sharing fragrance with others; the other recognises the years of hard work behind the scenes. I honestly couldn’t choose between them.

Disclosure
I have received no incentive to write this series and the inclusion of perfumers is entirely down to my choice and preference.
