Nobody could accuse Avon of not moving with the times. Their prolific launch rate keeps me on my toes, although you need to be quick and stockpile as discontinuation rates can be fast too. Reliable classics, on trend newbies and seasonal flankers: Avon does it all. No, I’m not a rep, I’m just a fan and have been since my first bottle of Pretty Peach circa Christmas 1976.

This launch delves into new and welcome territory: parfum strength. Avon Far Away Beyond is even stronger than an eau de parfum and keeps its longevity promises. The bottle is elegantly packaged in a kind of chocolate bottle with a gold lid. It looks good on a dressing table next to the others from the range.

If you’re familiar with the Far Away range, you might already know that some of the Far Away flankers smell nothing like the original. Far Away Beyond does.

Not only does Far Away Beyond resemble the original, but it fiddles with the dials a bit so that you have more vanilla and more white flowers almost simultaneously. The listed notes are simple: pear, jasmine and madagascan vanilla. The jasmine is dominant and doesn’t fade away. The vanilla meets it in the middle and fuses with it all the way to the finish, which is about seven hours later on my skin. The pear strikes a subtle fruity balance without being sweet or too prominent. What you have here is a modern take on the original, made intense by its extra strength. It’s not as powdery as Avon Far Away, and it has more white flowers. It could easily fit alongside the many modern designer fragrances that would cost four times as much.

Verdict? Good work Avon. Great bottle and elegant packaging, and longevity lives up to its parfum strength.
