Miller Harris Powdered Veil by Mathieu Nardin: My Kind of Perfume
Call me old fashioned, because I am, but I absolutely adore any fragrance that speaks of earlier decades. I’m highly suggestible and like to live in whatever world my fragrances take me to, so Miller Harris Powdered Veil had me to at Bonjour. I’m a sucker for powdery fragrances anyway as they remind me of the messy, glamorous dressing tables of messy, glamorous women who used old fashioned powder puffs. I’m always up for that.

Powdered Veil opens with rhubarb, pink pepper and geranium. This makes for an interesting start since geranium smells like rose mixed with wet black pepper and rhubarb is (in my opinion) a strawberry mixed with a pear. The pink pepper is a berry not a spice, but has a bursting pinkness that makes for a very feminine bouquet. Don your satin peignoir, we’re going deeper.

With that feminine and fragrant beginning, it’s time for the magic to take place. One of the most prominent notes here is cashmeran, which has nothing to do with cashmere or nature, but everything to do with a man-made accord that suggests the fluffiest of pashminas against skin. It’s perfect here, and acts as a sort of muffler to the other notes, giving this the “through a veil” feel that the name suggests. In fact, Powdered Veil evokes the scent of brand-new expensive clothes. You know that scent of a high-end boutique where everything is dazzlingly pristine and enticing? That.

The long lasting and sensual base feature the two notes that to me, are the dominant features here: sandalwood and amber, both inviting and velvety. This is rounded off with a mélange of the earlier rhubarb and softened with a swathe of diaphanous white musk and irresistibly appealing cashmere. The powdery notes seem to happen by accident, or maybe the cashmeran and fluffy musk makes that happen. Either way, I can’t help seeing face powder and bridal veils when I smell this. I could wear this anywhere, anytime, forever. Powdered Veil is pure femininity and class all the way.
