Who remembers the seismic launch of Mugler Angel in 1992? Touted as the first gourmand (according to the brand), Angel was everywhere in the early nineties. I remember going into the Perfume Hall in Harrods around that time and seeing a sea of blue and silver as the giant Mugler Angel bottles and fascias seemed to overwhelm that most overwhelming of hallowed fragrance havens. With life size Jerry Halls on every bus and billboard, the scent of Angel was everywhere: trains, lifts, nightclubs, restaurants and offices. What an entrance. What a fragrance.

early ad for Mugler Angel. Hard to miss, easy to love.

“Angel is reinvented in a new, modern interpretation. a creamy, generous pistachio accord, wrapped in powdery vanilla and dazzling bergamot.”

At the time, I turned my nose up, wondering how people could dare to smell so strongly, said she, wearing half a bottle of Cacharel LouLou at breakfast.

Needless to say, its success has led to countless flankers, from Elixir to Nova and Muse and many more in between.  Its signature notes are chocolate, peaches and patchouli, in spades. It’s instantly recognizable and I almost miss its ubiquity.

So what of the brand new flanker, Mugler Angel Stellar? What mouthwatering angle does it have to offer us? In a word, pistachio. Yes, the pistachio zeitgeist is far from over, as you will know from the almost cult status of Kayali Pistachio EDP and Dubai chocolate (now available in a choc ice).

In the case of Angel Stellar, the pistachio offers a creamy, salty, almond accord that works exceptionally well; a toned-down version of the Chocolate All Areas DNA that made Mugler Angel so memorable. Combined with a lively opening of bergamot (lime/lemon) and bourbon vanilla, this is a creamier version that has more in common with pistachio ice cream than the siren call of Angel. There is a hint of biscuit here too, making me think of cheesecake again (not difficult). Any Angel flanker needs that Patchouli kick back to Nineties-Look-At-Me decadence, and Stellar has it.

Angel Stellar is no wallflower, but for those who may have found the original de trop, this one settles nicely into a picture of eating pale green creamy cheesecake while wearing scarlet lip gloss. But sexier. And less messy.
