Cochine Tuberose and Wild Fig by Kate Crofton-Atkins and Maurice Roucel.
INSPIRED BY TROPICAL EVENINGS AND SUN-WARMED TERRACES, COCHINE CAPTURES THE SCENTS AND ROMANCE OF FRENCH ASIA, THROUGH ITS RANGE OF LUXURIOUS CANDLES, DIFFUSERS AND BATH & BODY COLLECTIONS.
Galbanum dodgers sit down! You may not want to join in with this one. The rest of you, come with me and discover Cochine Tuberose and Wild Fig. I’ve never reviewed a Cochine fragrance before and to be honest, I can’t remember where I got my sample from, but pretty sure it wasn’t from the brand. I suspect a Perfume Society Discovery Box.

Cochine was founded by Kate Crofton-Atkins, a skincare and beauty expert, formerly of L’Oreal. When Kate moved to Saigon, she was inspired by the abundance of flora and the chic French architecture. This inspiration led to the establishment of Cochine Saigon. You only have to watch the video on the website to be carried away with the beauty of Saigon. Yes, it can get confusing with Ho Chi Minh City, but it is generally accepted that the south bit of the city is customarily called Saigon, and the airport is still SGN. (Thanks Google).

Now to the perfume. This is no run of the mill crowd pleaser created to sell ’em high. This is a unique fragrance ( i.e I can think of nothing that compares) that may challenge you before you begin to embrace it. The wall of galbanum is cold and high and bitter, but I quite like my galbanum cold, and if you like Chanel 19 and its haughtiness, you may like this too.
The tuberose, usually such a diva, takes a while to get through the galbanum door, but is audacious and bold. The fig accent calms it down a little, complementing its creamy note with its cooling milky facets. Even after nearly an hour, the galbanum is not leaving any time soon, giving this statement floral an almost spiky exuberance that I imagine would suit the humidity of Saigon and its flora and great rivers.

As far as the Refresh Factor goes, this is off the scale. With its oleander, night flowering jasmine and tuberose absolute, there’s no escaping the white flowers that will lure you like an open window on a hot night. Once everything has had a chance to calm down and blend in, this becomes an exceptional fragrance that’s not afraid to take over the room, the night, the party. That astringency really has my heart and I can never have too many white flowers. If you like the sound of this, then you might like Cochine Tuberose and Wild Fig. I definitely do.

Where to buy it

Disclosure
I used up a 2ml sample over two days. I suspect it came from one of The Perfume Society Discovery Boxes but nether they nor Cochine have solicited this review. Opinions are my own. This article first appeared in 2023 and has been updated for 2025.
