Eighties Greaties: Giorgio Beverly Hills Red by Bob Aliano

From the archives: Go big or go home because it’s time for some Eighties glamour. Floof up your hair and pad out those shoulders, because today we’re talking about Giorgio Beverly Hills Red.

I’d been hanging on to a TK Maxx gift voucher for months but remained uninspired until a couple of weeks ago when I saw this retro glamour puss winking at me* (Edit- no longer in TK Maxx, see below for stockists). It was sort of a blind buy based on a vague and distant memory, but after one spray I knew we were meant to be together.

Giorgio Red is just not the kind of perfume they would launch today. It’s too floral, too retro, too powdery, too much, but those are all the things I love about it. It smells like hairspray, lipstick, Alexis Carrington, giant statement earrings with a matching necklace, red nails and diamanté. According to Fragrantica, it has every note known to the perfume world, including many of my favourites. There are aldehydes (love them) and an entire flower shop (jasmine, rose, tuberose, lily of the valley, orange flower, iris, hyacinth, carnation, gardenia). There’s a mossy finish, along with ALL the woods and resins you can imagine. On paper, it should be a messy try-hard, but in a bottle it’s feminine, loud, spicy, fresh and beautiful. It might be 2022 (edit: or 2025), it might be the era of caramel and oud, but I for one, am thoroughly enjoying my brand new, value for money Eighties Greatie.
