Ruth Mastenbroek Dagian

Ruth Mastenbroek Dagian EDP 2019

Ruth Mastenbroek takes years to launch a fragrance, which gives you some idea of how much I look forward to them. It’s up there with Star Wars films (apart from Rogue One which I didn’t care for). When I first smelled Ruth Mastenbroek Dagian, it was worth the wait.

Dagian’s name means a dawning in Old English. Once you spray it, you’ll understand why, because this is one of brightest, sharpest and most radiant fragrances I have ever smelled. What really blew me away is the fact that this scent is almost the complete opposite of her previous fragrance, Firedance, which was a smoky, oud infused rose. Ruth’s versatility leaves me awe struck.

Dagian was inspired Ruth’s first holiday without her parents, when she had the world, and the sea, at her feet. It’s a feeling of a fresh and early start when all possibilities seem thrillingly there for the taking. I’m fifty five and feeling a bit jaded, but even I started feeling the winds of optimism when Dagian zinged out from the bottle like a Julie Andrews song.

Is it any wonder that this is such a radiant scent when you learn that the opening notes are lime and mint? Separately they are like a blast of fresh air, but together, and with an added breeze of sea salt, they are magical. You can imagine, as Ruth did, digging your feet into the sand and looking out onto an endless horizon that represents the infinite choice the world has to offer.

Let’s talk about the orange flower, because this can often smell different depending on the perfume and the perfumer. With Dagian, the orange flower is as sharp as a mouthful of grapefruit first thing in the morning. Rather than making you wince, it echos the shock of having bravely jumped into a cold pool. The characteristic zestiness of orange combined with the sharp greenery and the billowing floral notes is a major player in Dagian, and it wouldn’t be the same without it. When the weather is uncomfortably hot, Dagian is the cure.
