Shay & Blue Dandelion Fig: The Scent of the Garden

dandelion fig bottle

If you spent hours playing in the garden as a child, you may well stop in your tracks and think that Shay & Blue London Dandelion Fig is like a Tardis, taking you back there. That’s certainly the effect it had on me.

dandelion figShay & Blue London make the kind of scents you always wished people would make. Dandelion Fig is one of those.  It’s not a fruity floral and despite its fig notes, not really a gourmand, although the scent of it certainly made my mouth water.  Dandelion Fig takes every refreshing and earthy note from the garden (and not necessarily a neat garden) and brings them all together in one uplifting, leafy, earthy accord.

Dandelion Fig opens with dandelion and lemongrass. When I was growing up, there was a rumour that picking dandelions would make you wet the bed. As a result, they were often seen, sniffed and never picked, at least not until they became clocks.

The handy thing about dandelions, and one of the reasons why I love this fragrance, is that dandelions provide dock leaves.  Dock leaves when crushed can cure the heat of nettle rash when you’re playing out all day and can’t be bothered to go home and get Germolene (another great smell, if you ask me).  It’s left me with a lifelong liking for green leafy notes in fragrance.

After the dandelion there is tomato vine and lemongrass.   You may recall my review of Library of Fragrance Tomato, which I raved about.  It had hints of lemon verbena and that uplifting earthy green scent of the slightly furry vines that hold those juicy plum tomatoes.   Well, tomato vine is here again and teamed with juniper.  The last word goes to fig, which is eked out into a perfectly sized measure against the other ingredients,  enhancing the  juiciness and adding a touch of depth. Dark, juicy fig, to my nose, always borders on wrong and stops just short of it.

This is a scent that doesn’t try to please the masses, but ends up pleasing little old me in spades.  Muddy garden spades.   Dandelion Fig is green, fresh and earthy and out of all the scents in the Perfume Society Latest Launches Box, this and the Annick Goutal stood out from the rest as my absolute favourites.  This is a great fig scent for people who are still unsure about fig. fig tree

My Top Ten Scents for Spring

brambleberry

Looking through my blog I found it hard to believe that I’ve never done a Spring round up. Since I am a devoted fan of hesperides and green notes, this seemed nothing short of a shortfall. Spring is that time when you can leave the heavy hitters behind and start to wear the scents that reflect a cold earth coming back to life. Many of my favourite flowers are Spring flowers: daffodils, bluebells and hyacinths. I love them in real life and I love them in my garden.

1. 4160 Tuesdays Ealing Green

fragrantica

This brings to mind a madrigal I can sing (the only one actually) “Each with his merry lass/Upon the greene grass”. This is, as that quote might suggest, green and grassy and a little chalky and violetty in the base, like a mossy white cliff.  I adore it. You can buy it from 4160 Tuesdays. I reviewed it here.

2. Aftelier Palimpsest

Mandy Aftel, from www.aftelier.com

Dear Mandy Aftel sent me a lovely sample of Palimpsest and my first thought was “she has captured the daffodil!”. It is an exact capture, and being Welsh, I know my daffodils. My review is here. You can buy Mandy’s wonderful (and all natural) creations from her website.

3.Tauer Carillon Pour Un Ange

carillon pour un angeI could not leave out a lily of the valley scent in a Spring line up.  I am attempting to grow lily of the valley for the first time this year and I hope my late grandmother’s green fingered genes will live on. I have a full bottle of Carillon Pour Un Ange on my dressing table and believe me when I say a little goes a long way. Here’s my review. You can buy it from the Tauer website or you could try Les Senteurs.

4. Shay and Blue London English Cherry Blossom

cherry blossomWhat could be more springlike than blossom? Here you really get the cherries as well as the petals. I have a full bottle of this and the packaging alone is worth owning. It’s a joy to look at and to wear. You can read my review here. You can buy Shay and Blue from trusty Marks and Spencer.

5. Friedemodin Vertine

www.Friedemodin.com

A delightfully green and refreshing scent with hints of mint and basil. It is as gentle as a watercolour. This is one of four beautiful scents in this small but superb capsule range. You can read my review of it here. You can now buy Freidemodin in TK Maxx as well as instore at Harvey Nichols.

6. Library of Fragrance

Tomato-LOF-Hero.jpg_1024x1024There are two Library of Fragrance scents that sum up Spring for me: Wet Garden has a touch of earthiness and bags of fresh hyacinth. My review is here. It smells like total heaven on my friend Alison!

Library of Fragrance Tomato proved that if ever it was worth smelling something blind it was this. I was sent it as a surprise and I fell for it hard. Replete with green shoots, leaves and that rhubarby/lemon scent of a true greenhouse tomato, this is an uplifting scent that deserves it place in any Spring list. My recent review is here. You can buy Wet Garden and Tomato from Library of Fragrance or Boots.

7. Penhaligon’s Bluebell

bluebellHow can it be Spring unless there are bluebells? Bluebells are one of my favourite flowers. Penhaligon’s has captured it better than anything else I have tried. My review is here. You can buy Bluebell from Penhaligon’s, Amazon UK or allbeauty.com.

8. Carven L’Eau de Toilette

carven bottleI reviewed this beautiful green scent recently ( see link here) and it was light, airy and clean smelling. This is a delight to wear on a spring day and reasonably priced too. You can buy it from Amazon UK or from Fragrance Direct.

9. Miller Harris Coeur de Jardin

millerharris jardin denfanceMiller Harris, ever reliable, comes up with the goods yet again. Coeur de Jardin is a beautifully spring like fragrance that teams pear, tuberose, jasmine and moss together for the scent of a garden straight from your childhood. My review is here. I also recommend Cassis en Feuille (review here), which is blackcurrants and tomatoes, but a realistic greenhouse version. You can buy these from the Miller Harris website.

10. Jo Loves No 42 The Flower Shop

product_100_fragrance_flower-shopNo 42 The Flower Shop is named after Jo Malone’s first workplace. Jo Malone MBE of Jo Malone fame (does that make sense?) has created a second, more personal perfume house. Using fragrance notes she is passionate about,No 42 the Flower Shop has that lovely accord of a florists that is as much about stems and leaves as it about fresh petals and buds. My review is here. You can buy this from Jo Loves.

The Perfume Society Scent With Love Discovery Box- Review and GIVEAWAY

scentwithlove

Enormous excitement here at IScent HQ as The Perfume Society has made me their blogger of the month. I knew I was a fan of theirs, and I am delighted to know that they are a fan of mine too. You can find their article about IScentYouADay right here.

Screen-Shot-2016-02-17-at-17.01.04 (1)

Truly, I’m blushing all over the shop today.

It seems fitting then to review the latest Discovery Box I ordered last month. (There’s another coming soon- more of which anon.)

I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I’m a huge fan of The Perfume Society Discovery Boxes. Each box offers a carefully curated selection of perfume samples that would take even a sample hustler like me a good year and several cities to get under my own steam. Each box has a handy postcard with history, notes and discussion prompts. There’s usually a couple of beauty treats such as hand cream or nail polish too. It’s like getting a birthday present. So today I am reviewing the Perfume Society Scent With Love Discovery Box  and here’s what’s in it:

vanillamarblebottle

1. Agonist Vanilla Marble EDP

I recently reviewed this beauty (see link here) and would heartily recommend it to lovers of vanilla, and more importantly, those who are not, because Vanilla Marble gives you the rich black vanilla pod without the sugar. I thought I had seen enough Vanilla but this comes at it from a  different angle and it’s very addictive.

incredible bottle

2. Taylor Swift Incredible Things

With so many Grammys to arrange on her mantelpiece, I don’t know how Taylor Swift found the time to collaborate on Incredible Things. The nice thing about this latest fragrance from her is that it didn’t take the most obvious route down fragrant Celebrity Street. There’s suede and vetiver that lifts this above the competition, and at a great price too. See my earlier review here.

elie saab rose

3. Elie Saab Rose Couture

I’ve yet to smell anything by Elie Saab that I didn’t like. Rose Couture is no exception. The orange blossom that is used so seamlessly in the original, is coupled with roses upon roses and rounded off with sandalwood and patchouli. This is a terrific scent for anytime of day. It manages to be both sophisticated and accessible. If you’re a sucker for a good rose, you can’t go wrong.

cherry blossom

4. Shay and Blue London English Cherry Blossom

I fell hard for this, which surprised me as I can usually take or leave cherry blossom. My glowing review is here so you can see for yourself how much I liked it. Perfect for Spring.

moschino fresh couture

5. Moschino Fresh Couture

I loved this one too: a post ironic take on the laundry fresh accord, but made invigorating with citrus and pretty flowers, and with a flourish of white patchouli. You can read my review here.

narciso rod

6. Narciso Rodriguez For Her EDP

I have long been a lover of this one. See my review of the EDT here. It comes as no surprise to find that the two legendary noses behind it were none other than Christine Nagel and His Majesty Francis Kurkdjian. If you haven’t yet tried it, this sample will be a portal.

sex goddess

7. 4160 Tuesdays Sex Goddess

I reviewed this one recently. You can find my review here. Sex Goddess comes from Sarah McCartney’s Crimes of Passion series and like the rest of the scents in the capsule collection, the ingredients and blending are, I believe, her best yet.

mure et musc

8. L’Artisan Parfumeur Mure et Musc

I was new to his classic but loved its combination of dark fruit- both sweet and bitter, combined with soft musk. Such a killer combination and yet so simple. You can read my review here.

i am juicy

9. Juicy Couture I Am Juicy

I Am Juicy is everything you want from the fruity floral genre. Raspberry and passion fruit segue into pretty sweet pea and roses, and its all rounded off with an amber-y musky finish. I even got a hint of rhubarb from it, which was very welcome.

aurelia

10. Beauty Treat One: Aurelia Probiotic Skincare Firm and Revitalise Dry Body Oil

I recently had an allergic reaction which left my hands dry like cracked desert earth. Soothing this on them was like finding an oasis. Scented with neroli and lavender and containing a shot of Vitamin E, my hands are starting to look normal again. It’s all organic too.

time bomb

11. Beauty Treat Two: Time Bomb Hand to Hand Combat Hand Cream.

This beautifully scented hand cream, has been just what I needed lately. Evidence? It’s now empty and I miss it. However, in the Discovery Box, on the Time Bomb postcard is a discount code for 30% off a full tube.

Shay & Blue London: English Cherry Blossom

cherry blossom

Shay & Blue London has been around since 2012 and is snowballing in popularity thanks to its availability in your local Marks and Spencer. The sample I am reviewing today is from the Perfume Society Scent With Love Discovery Box.

Cherry Blossom doesn’t usually interest me. I find it a bit too sweet and cloying after a while. However Nose Julie Masse for Shay & Blue has come at this from a different angle. By adding citrussy bergamot, the cherry blossom stays bright and light. There’s a nuance of black cherry too- an accent of lovely dark fruit that doesn’t overpower like plum can.  There are woody notes in the base, appropriately enough cherry wood, of course, and blessedly, no vanilla or anything to make this into confectionery.

brambleberry

Throughout the morning, its the bergamot that hangs out with the cherry blossom, keeping it company. I love bergamot alone or in anything so this was a welcome innovation that gives this lovely English Cherry Blossom a fresh and uplifting feel for spring or summer. Impossibly feminine and pretty, I would definitely bag myself a full bottle of this gorgeously pretty scent. Its my birthday next month so this will be making it onto my wish list.

The Perfume Society Discovery Boxes, are as you may have gathered, a favourite thing of mine and I will be reviewing more from this box of delights very soon.
