Celebrity Perfume: Still by Jennifer Lopez

still ad

You may have seen my recent post about celebrity perfumes in which I nailed my colours to the mast. I’m a fan. Celebrity fragrances are made by experts and priced to sell.  What’s not to love?

stillToday I am reviewing my new bottle of Still by Jennifer Lopez. It was recommended to me by friend of the blog Rachael, who is a fan of Still and told me she would love to read a review.  Like an olfactory DJ, I’m always happy to do requests. Rachael, this is for you.

Still opens with Earl Grey Tea and oranges,  giving this a lovely fresh and clean opening straight away.  My first thought is that this would make the perfect work scent.  It’s light and clean and surely would offend nobody.  The light opening pretty much stays put throughout, just gathering some lily of the valley, fressia and jasmine along the way.  None of this becomes rich or cloying; the orangey citrus notes keep everything light and zingy.

The base is allegedly sandalwood, amber, musk and pepper, but this really doesn’t end up as rich and spicy as those notes might suggest. In fact, I would say some nice clean musks, like freshly shampooed hair, and the faintest tang of clean spices, like a chai tea for example. still amazon

All in all, my bottle of eau de parfum was jolly good value at just over £10 for 30ml from Amazon UK. This would make a great gift for a teen since it is no way provocative, but clean, light and pretty.  Don’t worry if your teenage years are an embarrassing distant blur of cringiness- you can wear this even if you’re, ooh, I don’t know…47?  (Ahem).

JLo Still is absolutely bang on the money for summer, for work or for a young perfume recipient.  Or an attractive older woman.  From Wales.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Celestia: Like the Tears of an Angel

aqua celestia fb

Reviewing a Maison Francis Kurkdjian scent feels slightly intimidating, like entering a posh hotel in my oldest pyjama bottoms. I don’t feel as if I am qualified, if you like.  I am pretty much in awe of M. Kurkdjian so spent  a lot of time learning how to spell his surname for a start.  Least I could do really.

aqua celestia sampleI obtained a sample of Maison Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Celestia from the recent Perfume Society Heaven Scents Discovery Box. It had an  immediate impact on me.  It felt like the ultimate in crystalline, fresh, pure scent.  You know that feeling when you’re so hot that only an ice cold waterfall will do? Well Aqua Celestia is for when you can’t find one.

Opening with mint and lime in spades, this will make you smell impossibly clean: as if you’ve never sweated a milli drop in your whole life.  There is  a hint of mimosa, which is lightly floral with a faint tinge of sweetness around the edges, like a blurry border.  The lime and mint meets a base of clean musk, and Aqua Celestia sits on my skin, like the tears of an angel.  It smells like I live on a  cloud. Pure bliss.

My only teeny whinge is that it’s not as radiant, nor as longlasting as I would have liked, but then I am only testing the eau de toilette, so I’ll have to wait for the eau de parfum, if it’s coming.HeavenScent2017shopAW

Annick Goutal L’Ile au Thé: A Blast of Fresh Air

Fragrantica
Fragrantica

Annick Goutal L’Ile au Thé is quite possibly one of the most refreshing scents I have ever tried, and I have tried A LOT.  Inspired by a Southern Korean volcanic island, this green tea delight does not disappoint.

L’Ile au Thé opens with a blast of zingy mandarin: pith, pulp and zest. That ought to wake you faster than an Espresso.  Then comes the green tea, almost at the same time, and this green refreshing note never leaves. (It is there in the top notes, there in the heart and there in the base). Just as you are easing into the day,  a middle note of feathery light apricot blossom ( osmanthus) pops up with just a enough fruit to hint at a whisper of sweetness without dousing it in syrup.  The final, and long lasting base note is one of tangy citrussy green tea softened with musk around the edges.

This is equally good on a man or a woman and has a real strength about it that will make everyone think you have just stepped out of the world’s most invigorating shower.  L’Ile au Thé is the antidote to and nemesis of humidty.  Beautiful!

Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca: A Meadow in a Bottle

herba

Despite the grass in my garden currently being sodden and the earth being on the boggy side, and despite the fact that we are bracing ourselves for torrential rain later (again), I haven’t given up on my Pollyanna fantasy of wearing fresh summer scents whilst wafting around in the sunshine.

garden

Trusty Guerlain has created a brilliantly green and grassy scent in Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca.  I must admit I didn’t used to like it due to the inclusion (which is by no mean heavy) of Green Tea.  I didn’t used to like Green Tea at all as a note, finding it metallic and cold.  However, since trying Green Tea flankers from Elizabeth Arden, and exploring the note further, I have come round to the fact that since it is best friends with my favourite Bergamot, I ought to get to know it better.

Indeed Herba Fresca challenges my preconceptions on a couple of levels.  A few years ago I would have rejected not just the Green Tea, but the Mint too.  Today, having been around the block a bit in terms of fragrance, I fully embrace Herba Fresca and want to have this beautiful gilded bottle on my dressing table.

The mint reminds me a little of  LUSH Smell of Weather Turning ( see my earlier review):  a pleasing combo of mint, hay and tarmac that frankly, I am a bit addicted to.  In Herba Fresca, created by none other than Jean Paul Guerlain, the combination of Green Tea, damp green grass and  Mint makes this so refreshing that they should find another name for refreshing: Revitalizing? Invigorating? Reviving?.  I wouldn’t say astringent: it’s not as harsh as that.  It has Lemon but is so much more than a citrus. It’s more botanical, yet carries the memory of dewy grass on your skin for as long it lasts.

I couldn’t really find the Cyclamen or the Pear, but I was very happy to sniff and sniff at this pastoral beauty as the rain drizzles on the windows. Longevity is about four hours, possibly five, which is about the going rate for an Eau de Toilette.  The price is under £40 but you get a generous 75ml bottle for that.  I wouldn’t turn one down at any time of the year.

Clarins Eau Dynamisante: Fresh Air After The Thunder

Image

Dramatic Thunderstorms this week: exactly overhead, just one scant second between the thunder and lightning. The weather has been unbearable sticky and close, I might have known a storm was on its way.  What can you wear when you feel so humid that even standing within three feet of others makes you feel uncomfortably hotter (and not in a  good way)?  The answer is Clarins Eau Dynamisante.

Eau Dynamisante slices through heat and humidity like a cool open window in a muggy house. Immediately fresh, the Lemon, Coriander and Petitgrain rush to the rescue, chasing away a sticky hot day. The base note is Patchouli,  although even the Patchouli is refreshing, rather than being a winter warmer. I can’t neglect the herbs either: Thyme, Rosemary and Cardoman. This many herbs could  remind you of hot soup, but in this case they are fresh as a dew dropped posy.

Eau Dynamisante is not meant as a fragrance, although it is popular as such. It is technically a fragrance skin treatment, but people buy it for the incredible scent. If there is a scent that makes you smell more shower fresh and spotlessly clean than this, then I’ve yet to smell it.

This fits into the Eau de Cologne category in that it is refreshing, Herbal and Citrussy and not expected to last long.  However, I was pleasantly surprised that a citrus tinged Patchouli basenote was present after around four hours.

Widely available, and reasonably priced at  around £24 for 100ml, this is a classic for a hot day. Keep it in the fridge and spray and spray on hot skin. Bliss.
