The Very Best Celebrity Fragrances 2017 (The Updated IScent Guide)

stash-ad

The problem with celebrity fragrances is that they keep getting discontinued.  Out of my favourites from just three years ago, around six are impossible to get now.  The rumour on the grapevine is that celeb fragrances are on the way out, or at least on the way down, and I have mixed feelings about this. antonio_banderas_blue_seduction_for_men1Firstly, if all celeb fragrances were of the fruity floral fruitichoulil smellalike genre that so many were, then fine.  See ya.  No problem here. However, celebrity fragrances are like jumble sales.  It might look like a load of junk but when you rummage, you find gold and treasure.

withlove

The other great thing about celebrity fragrances is that they are not expensive. They’re competing with other celebrity fragrances which are also not expensive, so they can’t risk sky high prices. That’s not their demographic.  Oh, and don’t forget that the celebrity doesn’t actually make them.  Celeb fragrances are made by liztemrespected houses such as Givauden, Coty and Elizabeth Arden.  I really can’t see Beyoncé in a lab coat with a pipette moaning about the price of orris butter, can you?  Lovely mental image though.

I have found some absolute gems among celeb fragrances and I am genuinely sad not to be able to buy some of them anymore.

What follows below is an up-to-date, up-to-the minute round up of celebrity fragrances that you can definitely easily buy at the moment at the time of going to press, I promise.  Some are old faithfuls that have been around a while, and show no signs of leaving,  and some are new.  All of them are jolly good, at least in my opinion.

  1.  Sarah Jessica Parker Stash SJP

This is my number one favourite.   SJP is rare in that she is deeply involved in the scents she creates and her own tastes influence what she launches.  In the case of Stash, I applaud her for taking a risk.  This smoky sandalwood and incense treat was never going to be a mass market crowd pleaser, but critics and fumeheads love it, as do I.  Here’s my review and here’s where you can buy it.

lovely

  1.  Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely

I wear this regularly and now that my 100ml bottle is going down, I’m looking to replace it.  It suits just about everyone and to me, it has a wonderful 50s retro feel.  You can read my review here.  Many compare it to Narciso Rodriguez For Her.  You can buy Lovely in many places at varying prices. I bought mine from  here.

jloglow

  1.   JLo Glow

A wonderfully clean scent that reminds me of freshly washed hair and clean laundry.  It lasts for ages too.   Launched in 2002, this shows no sign of going anyway and has become a classic for good reason.  You can buy it here.

curious_britney_competition

  1.  Britney Spears Curious

This was launched way back in ’04, which is a long time ago in the perfume universe..  I complimented a friend on this and asked her what she was wearing- I was surprised when I found out it was Britney Curious as I’d written it off.   Its use of magnolia and pear sets it apart from the usual pink sugary fruity florals and it has a lovely light feel to it with no stickiness.  Extra points for the beautiful blue glass bottle, and if you can get one with the puffy squeezy atomiser, even better.  You can buy it here.

rihanna3

  1.  Rihanna Rogue

Rogue made an impact on me because it didn’t go in the obvious direction that it could have. I t could have gone all pink pepper and red berries and vanilla, but it didn’t.  In fact, it reminded me of Serge Lutens Daim Blond, which is all about the unusual but genius combination of suede and apricots.  Here’s my review of Rogue and here’s where you can buy it.

reblfleur

  1.  Rihanna Reb’l Fleur

I have a full 100ml bottle of this.  I wouldn’t normally have thought of buying it, but my dear brother picked it out for me himself for my birthday. I was so touched. I hardly ever get perfume as a gift (violins!) and I was delighted to get this whopper.  Reb’l Fleur is a heavy hitting, patchouli rich fruity floral with a hit of coconut and vanilla.   Sillage is massive and longevity huge.  Two sprays in the morning and you’ll be sorted till tea time. You can buy it here.

sensational

  1.  Celine Dion Sensational

By a happy turn of fate, I stumbled across this in my local Lloyds Pharmacy when I was picking up my husband’s prescription.  There was a tester at the till and it was on special offer at 9.99.  I didn’t buy it  that day, and when I went back, it was gone.   However, I fell in love with it.  It lasted at least seven hours and was a delicious melange of pear, plum, freesia, lily of the valley and violet.  It opens like a juicy tropical fruit scent and segues into a stunning musky floral.  The nose behind it is the legendary Maurice Roucel.  This one is at the top of my Wanted list. You can buy it here.

  1. Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds

This opens like an aldehyde and ends like a chypre.  Full of old school Hollywood glamour, this is bursting with all the rich white flowers: tuberose, jasmine, neroli.  It’s not really one for the young palate of today, but as a fan of classic chypres and big eighties sillage, this is right up my street.  It’s cheap as chips and widely available.  Round of applause for the diamante choker round its neck. You can buy it here.

adam levine

9.  Adam Levine For Her

This is a real gem that often goes under the radar.  Lisa Jones let me borrow her bottle and I was very impressed. This comes in a smart white box in a bottle that’s shaped like a microphone. This is a woody, slightly spicy scent with a long, langorous sandalwood base.  It is so cheap I was suspicious, but I can vouch for its fabulousness.  Plus you know, Adam Levine.  Cor.  You can read my review here and buy it from here for less than ten quid.  Oh, and it’s totally unisex, so ignore the “For Her” label.

  1. Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights

This has featured on my previous best celeb scents list and it qualifies for this one because it is still available and still cheap.  It has patchouli, papyrus and amber, and many say that it is a dead ringer for Prada Amber ( and it is!).  Still available on Amazon for under £20 for a big bottle.  Here’s my review.

jlopez_deseo-perfumeThe ones I miss

The following celeb fragrances are either available but three times the price they were, or impossible to find.  Reader, I mourn them: JLo Deseo, Hilary Duff with Love, Sarah Jessica Parker The Lovely Collection- Dawn, Endless and Twilight, Queen by Queen Latifah, Manifesto by Isabella Rossellini.

The ones I want to try

Antonio Banderas’s vast range (he has been launching scent since 1997), Drew Barrymore’s new ones, Joan Collins’ new ones for Marks and Spencer, Sofia by Sofia Vergara and Elizabeth Taylor Gardenia and Passion, which I still haven’t tried.

 How about you?

What celebrity fragrances do you like to wear? Which ones do you miss?  Which do you want to try?  Do let me know. I always love to hear from you.

Top Ten Best Celebrity Fragrances

rihanna3

Celebrity perfumes are ubiquitous and since they take up such a large part of the fragrance market, it would be foolish to discount them. Some press reports state that sales are on the wane (although JLo’s total sales are estimated at over 2billion), so maybe the love affair has peaked. However, for perfume opportunists like me, this usually means a drop in prices.

Many celebrity scents I have tried are sadly the candy floss/vanilla/cupcake type and many are difficult to distinguish from one another. However, celebrity fragrances are usually very reasonably priced so if you can find a good one and you don’t care what it says on the bottle ( I don’t) then there are decent scents out there to suit every pocket. Discernment is advised, however.

I have picked my ten best celebrity scents for you. Do let me know which you like best. I always love to hear from you.

I last wrote about Celebrity Scents in 2013 and some of my favourites from three years ago are still my favourites now, but I reckon it’s worth an update. Fame is a fickle mistress.

lovely

Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely

This remains my favourite celebrity scent. Sarah Jessica Parker was involved at every stage. This was no mere sniff’n’sign off. You can read about the development of Lovely Liquid Satin in Chandler Burr’s excellent book The Perfect Scent. Lovely is widely available and very reasonably priced. I loved it so much I have a permanent 100ml bottle on my dressing table. If you like Narciso Rodriguez For Her you will probably like this too. You can buy Lovely from allbeauty.com, Boots and The Fragrance Shop.

www.styleite.com

Rhianna Rogue

I saw this in my local Lloyds Pharmacy and it was just 9.99. I sprayed generously only to find that it smells very similar to Serge Lutens Daim Blond. Who knew? You can read my review here. You can by Rogue from FragranceDirect.

www.fruugo.co.uk

Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights

With a Vegas style bottle in green and gold, this was first brought to my attention by the wonderful Australian Perfume Junkies– one of my favourite blogs. With patchouli and papyrus, it somehow ends up smelling almost identical to Prada Amber EDP. I bought mine from allbeauty.com and had change from eight quid. My review is here.

jlopez_deseo-perfume

Jennifer Lopez Deseo

The blurb for this is that JLo was inspired by a walk through her Floridian garden at night. It has mimosa, jasmine, yuzu, bamboo and a mossy/patchouli base. It’s a light, white floral with beautiful lasting power.  My review is here. I have just treated myself to another bottle from allbeauty.com for 8.99. Gorgeous bottle too!

intimately-beckham-men

Intimately Beckham

With a name that unfortunately makes it sound like a hygiene product, this is a lovely light daytime floral that is very reasonably priced. You can read my review here. Intimately Beckham is widely available. You can buy it from The Fragrance Shop and FragranceDirect.

madonna-by-mert-alas-marcus-piggott-for-truth-or-dare-fragrance-2012-02

Madonna Truth or Dare

Madonna entered the celebrity fragrance with fashionable tardiness, but as usual, her entrance was worth waiting for.  Truth or Dare is a beautiful tuberose reminiscent of Fracas, but without quite the same depth. It’s an absolute bargain so get it while you can. My review is here. You can buy it from allbeauty.com for a mere £7.45.

liz t

Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds

There are mixed reviews on this, but as a fan of white flowers, aldehydes and powdery oak mossy finishes, this was a hit with me. If you like the sound of it, you can buy it from ( believe it or not) Sports Direct for only £9.00 or from Fragrance Direct.

incredible taylor

Taylor Swift Incredible Things

I reviewed this recently (see link) and I was impressed.  It’s still a bit of a sweetie, but the addition of a noticeable suede note gives it a slightly different direction and I found it very long lasting too.  You can get a sample from the Perfume Society Scent With Love Discovery Box, or  a full bottle from Superdrug, or AmazonUK to name but  a few.

queenlatifah

Queen by Queen Latifah

Opening with bright citrus, and ending up as a boozy vanilla, this is  a great fragrance. Some vanilla based scent can be very cake-batter, but this is rich and boozy liqueur- and no wonder- there’s cognac notes in it! . I liked it and you can read my review here. It reminded me of Christmas. You can buy it from allbeauty.com.

dawn

Sarah Jessica Parker The Lovely Collection Dawn

Dawn is part of The Lovely Collection, made up of three scents: Dawn, Endless and Twilight. My favourite is Endless, although it’s very hard to get now. Dawn is still widely available and is beautifully light and airy. You can read my review here. With light touches of violet and herby Angelica, rounded off by a white musk finish, this is a beautiful daytime scent that represents very good value. You can buy it from allbeauty.com or AmazonUK.  It would make an ideal starter perfume for a young teen.

Perfumes For Under A Tenner- The 2015 Updated Guide

successimg.com
successimg.com

I still stand by my motto- you don’t have to be rich to smell good ( but you’d be in trouble if you had an Amouage habit). Seriously though, I get so many searches for “budget perfume” and “cheap perfume that smells good” that I know there is still a strong demand for good, accessible scent. Buy cheap doesn’t mean smell cheap.  There.  That’s another motto.

In writing this guide, I have to put out this disclaimer: prices may vary from site to site and store to store and month to month, but today, these prices are pretty much the norm with just a quid or two either way depending on stockist.  This guide is similar to the 2014 guide elsewhere on this blog, but with just a few changes to reflect changing prices or new discoveries.

laimant

1. Coty L’Aimant– it’s at the top of every bargain guide I write. If you like Chanel No 5, this was made six years later in 1927. It’s a powdery floral with lasting power that many more expensive perfumes still can’t match.  My tip is buy the Parfum de Toilette and not the cologne.  I bought my bottle from Boots.

www.fruugo.co.uk

www.fruugo.co.uk

2. Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights: A bargain buy that smells remarkably like Prada Eau de Parfum.  Its has papyrus and patchouli and makes for a smooth  milky, spicy scent that is far from the usual celeb-u-scent fruity floral.  You can buy it from allbeauty.com.

intimatelyb

3. Intimately Beckham For Her: I see this around a lot and it’s always well under ten quid.  But here’s why it’s a good seller:  it’s a light and pretty floral that is ideally suited to work or everyday and passes the commuter test ( i.e nobody will faint on the morning train).  Available from Boots, Superdrug, Amazon UK, or my local chemist!

just pink

4. Next Just Pink: A darling of a scent that is very much in the same vein as Narciso Rodriguez For Her or Ralph Lauren Romance.  Available from Next.  A 30ml bottle costs just £8.

greentea

5. Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Flankers. There are no less than five of these on allbeauty.com right now- all under ten quid and all good.  I know because I’ve tried them.  They make great presents for friends  and are crowd pleasing refreshing daytime florals.  This is not to say they are dull or predictable, but it’s a good brand that’s a safe bet, and they are all particularly wearable in summer.  Try Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Camellia or Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Honeysuckle.

kantali

6. Kantali by Milton Lloyd. Now don’t shoot me, but this smells a bit like Opium and only costs five quid. When I say YSL Opium, I don’t mean the fabulous powdery pre- reformulation stuff , but a thinner version of the new one that you can buy everywhere.  It lasts at least six hours and I like it.  Think a pared-down Opium style  eau de cologne with  eau de parfum staying power.  You can buy it from Amazon UK.

Karma

7. LUSH solid perfumes:  LUSH Gorilla are a bit hit and miss with me, but having said that, they inspire passionate reactions, which is a good thing.  LUSH solid perfumes come in delightful quirky tins and are priced between £6 and £9 depending on the scent.  Try LUSH Karma for £9. Longevity is… Wow.  You can buy it from LUSH instore or online.

muskfragr

8. Jovan Musk For Women. You’ve got to have a musk on in your scent wardrobe and  Jovan is a good bet.  Currently under £10 on allbeauty.com,  either Jovan or Alyssa Ashley are a safe pair of hands for a decent and affordable musk fragrance.

smoky-poppy-mini-gift-set_l

9. The Body Shop Smoky Poppy Eau de Toilette 30ml. Currently £8.50 and part of a range of 30ml scents at the same price.  Smoky Poppy is an Oriental-lite which I was quite taken by, and there are others in the range such as Honeymania, Vanilla, Moringa, Strawberry and Coconut.  Great for layering, but only eau de toilette strength so may need lunch time top ups.

Copy of sparklycitrus10.  Avon: You can’t do a bargain perfume list without including our dear friends Avon.  Avon Timeless retails at around £6 ( depending on the brochure) and is an ambery chypre that was brought back by popular demand after being discontinued.  Little Pink Dress is a lovely day time floral with lots of Peony, and Avon no 1 Bestseller Far Away and all its flankers were recently on sale for as little as £7 a bottle.  I also love the Avon Scent Essence Sparkly Citrus which I bought for only £4.

JLo Glow: Off to a Great Start

 Image

Jennifer Lopez was one of the first celebrities to launch her own signature fragrance line.  She follows early pioneers of Celeb scents Cher, Elizabeth Taylor and Antonio Banderas.  JLo Glow was launched back in 2002, and has broken records with its hugely successful sales figures. It is worth looking at an early celeb scent to see how and why things changed so much  from Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds and JLo Glow (both very good) to the fruity floribundances we have today.  (PS I just made up the word floribundances. You may use it. You’re welcome).

Today in 2013, High Street perfume shops would look very meagre without the vast range of celeb scents padding out the shelves. It has become a phenomenon. I often tell people (and my Mum) it is worth remembering that all celeb scents are made by professional, experienced Noses, but are often at the cheaper end of the market. Keep looking past the tacky packaging (I’m looking at you Justin Bieber) and you stumble across a gem such as Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights or Hilary Duff With Love: both celeb scents that I consider excellent. The name means nothing to me, I just want to know if it smells good. And if it does, I’ll wear it. I don’t care whose name is on the bottle. My snobbery went out the window a while back when I spent 3.99 on 15ml of Duff’s With Love and I had an epiphany smelling the rich Tropical Guaic Wood . Not what I expected at all.

Image
Amazon.co.uk

I often think the celeb scent market is like a jumble sale. It may look unpromising, but if you keep trying, you may find treasure.

Right at the start, before the boom began, there was JLo with Glow. Still around now, and still a steady seller, I tried it recently and was very pleasantly surprised. It’s soapy and clean smelling, like freshly shampooed hair. It reminded me a little of Cacharel Noa, only without the bloom’n’fade coffee bean opening.

The soapiness is not aldehydic, like say, First by Van Cleef and Arpels which stands a league above, but it is more Herbal Essences.  If you, like me, buy your shampoo based on whether you like the smell, then you may like this clean hair scent with light flower petals, light grapefruit, and gentle White Musk.

glow ad

After the soap faded into an innocent gentility, there was some definite Tuberose action going on, which lasted until the very end. Longevity was excellent in fact.  I tried two sprays of Glow at 9.15am and at 6pm it was still close to skin. Not bad at all for a good value scent.  I had a slight issue with the fact that the very last hours of the basenotes were a bit synthetic, but the good points outweigh the bad by a long chalk.

Adding to the bonhomie I am feeling towards this gem is the rumour that JLo is very involved in her scents, and they are much more than a sign off to her.  I am already a fan of JLo Deseo, and now I am a fan of Glow too.

Stockists

You can buy Glow from many places, including allbeauty.com and Amazon UK to name but two.

Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights: Papyrus and Patchouli and Other Non Sequitirs

Image

I was dead against trying this, having read Luca Turin’s review of “Fancy”, (he labels it apple pie) and believing it to be in the same vein. It very much is not. What persuaded me to buy’n’try Fancy Nights was an amusing and charming review by Katrina of Australian Perfume Junkies who described an evening wearing this scent. On asking her husband what he thought of her fragrance, he mistakenly thought the smell was the taxi they were in. A celeb scent that smells like a new taxi? I’m there! Where do I sign up?

Some further praise from Katrina led me to believe this could be another celebuscent surprise, much in the vein of Hilary Duff With Love: a wonderfully maverick non fruity floral, that frankly, has balls.

The second thing that made me buy this was the ridiculously cheap price of£14.95 on Amazon.co.uk.

Today my bottle of Fancy Nights arrived. With it’s dark green glass and faux gilt lid, it’s Arabian Nights Vegas Style. The smell is great. Not a blueberry in sight. Not so much as a whiff of candy floss. This is grown up and not all that commercial, and thank Goodness for that! (We have Steve Demercado, the creator, to thank for this refreshing restraint).

The top note is Papyrus, possibly where the “new cab” smell comes from. I have never come across Papyrus in a scent before and I can tell you that there is a definite “new office” or “modern bookshop” whiff about it. For someone who loves the smell of fresh paint and new carpet, this was somewhat of a kinky find.

The drydown kicks in with milky Patchouli and Sandalwood, leaving a dusty and milky spice trail. I didn’t quite get the Jasmine and Rose notes that this supposedly has, but the hint of Bergamot was there, and rather nice in among the Amber and Sandalwood.

All in all, this is new books, a bit of patchouli and a kind of milky, quiet spice.

The blonde, ditsy, sexy starlet did well. I am reminded of a quote from Dolly Parton: “I don’t mind when people call me a dumb blonde, because I know I know I’m not dumb, and I also know I’m not blonde”

Fancy Nights joins With Love in my Inexpensive Celebrity Scent “Hidden Gem” Hall of Fame.

PS If you like Prada Amber, then this is exceedingly similar, but you didn’t hear that from me.  I wasn’t here, OK?
