Nina Ricci Luna For Women (2016)

luna

I tried this today in my local House of Fraser just after the  school run.  The bottle cried out, “own me!” so loudly that I nearly got whiplash.   Like Snow White with a Bag for Life, I was rendered unable to pass such a beautiful tempting apple.

Luna is intended as the night time opposite to Nina Ricci Nina, which I have reviewed here.  Now although Nina isn’t my thing, I love it because my wonderful niece Liz wears it and she is very special to me. I decided to give Luna  a chance.  I fell headlong for its looks.

nina inaOn first spray, this is all synthetic citrus: not invigorating like lemon or grapefruit, more like Haribo  Party Mix.  The pear note burst forth and was rudely dominant, and then the vanilla and caramel poured in and rounded everything off.

In among the vanilla and pear is tiny bit of jasmine, sandalwood and musk, but all was indistinct and vague.

This is a fruity vanilla scent and is neither too strong nor too weak. It’s almost a confused gourmand.  Many Fragrantica readers say that it is almost exactly like YSL Manifesto, so if you like that, you’ll like this too.

I can’t dislike Luna as it’s bang on trend right now, but I will politely sit this one out since overly vanilla fruity scents are not my scene, man.

The bottle, though- oh my days, that bottle! Who wouldn’t want a beautiful blue glass apple on their dressing table? With a tiny vapo spray that’s part of a gold apple stalk? It almost nudges Marc Jacobs Decadence off my list of favourites. Throw all the packaging medals at this one, but not too hard, because that beautiful glass is a work of art

I found this in House of Fraser, but it’s widely available. I used a tester (very thoroughly) and opinions are my own.

Lancôme La Vie est Belle L’Absolu

Yesterday, just after lunch, I tried Lancôme La Vie est Belle L’Absolu and could NOT get it off.  It’s now Sunday evening.  I have had a shower, washed my hands many times and finally, only a bath shifted it.  Think cloying caramels and chocolate with a spiky base à la Thierry Mugler Angel, concentrated into essence form and with a staying power only rivalled by a tattoo.  I will even have to wash my coat as it rubs off onto my skin every time I wear it.

Lancôme La Vie est Belle  has proved to be a bestseller and seems to have tapped into a trend that dictates that it’s desirable for your perfume to make you smell like Thorntons Chocolatier.  Personally I dislike anything too gourmand ( with a few notable exceptions)  because it feels like I  am eating perfume or using food on my skin : my senses get confused and don’t know what to tell my brain.

Lancôme La Vie est Belle L’Absolu was initially a pleasant surprise- finally I could smell those flowers and make out the iris, and… was that rose?  With a hint of blackcurrant?  Wonderful- for about twenty minutes. Then the caramel barged in and took over, smothering everything and turning up the volume until I was walking home holding the guilty arm away from my side as if I blamed it.

The verdict is this:  If you like this, you have a bargain on your hands.  Even a small bottle will outlast anything permanent in your life. Staying power is nuclear.  Your whole house will smell of it, and your friends will smell like this, and your car and the bus and your children and their friends.

Unfortunately I didn’t like it at all.

Stockists: Lancome La Vie est Belle L’Absolu is available from Sephora.com or Lancome-usa.com or lancome.ca if you are in the USA or Canada or Europe.  In the UK, you can buy it from John Lewis, Debenhams, Amazon UK or House of Fraser.

Its Sunshine and Pancake Day! Sunshine and Pancakes by 4160 Tuesdays

4160 Tuesdays

Sarah McCartney is a  blogger’s dream.  When searching for a perfume to match the season, there could be only one choice for today and it’s particularly appropriate because what I seek right now is optimism and this has it in spades.

Sunshine and Pancakes opens with bright, morning fresh oranges and lemons ( say the bells of St Clements). The scent is clean, bright and prickly- you could say astringent- which in my book, is always a good thing.  The clever thing about this, and indeed, about so many 4160 scents, is the metamorphosis that takes place once your skin warms it up.

You start with citrus, which then becomes the actual smell of pancakes.  Sarah comfortably sidesteps the Lemsip trap and includes both honey and lemon in the mix without getting remotely medicinal.  This gentle gourmand mash up blends in seamlessly as the honey/vanilla “Who’s-cooking-pancakes- smell segues into the base notes.  The baseneotes are woody with sandalwood and warm Benzoin but still has a hint of the morning about it, like the ground drying under the sun after a downpour.  There is a warm earthiness emerging, just as the day dawns and the sun comes out.

All this in one bottle.  Pretty impressive.  Sunshine and Pancakes makes me want to eat outside and listen to birdsong.

One important note:  when talking pancakes, we are talking the thin British pancakes with crunchy sugar and a hint of lemon, not the doughy, delicious maple syrup USA pancakes that are to die for with some wafer thin crispy bacon.  *cleans dribble off keyboard*.

Stockists:  You can buy 4160 Tuesdays from the website,   as well as in person from 4160 HQ ( let them know first to check they’re about),  or from Burgin’s in York, and from Rouiller White.  In the USA and Canada you can buy a selection of 4160 Tuesdays scents from Indiescents, LuckyScent and excitingly- the Virgin Atlantic website to buy before you fly.
