Narciso Eau de Parfum Poudree by Narciso Rodriguez

Poudree

I do love a bit of Poudree. I love it in Chanel No 19 Poudree and I love it as a note in any perfume. The powderier, the better. Don’t be put off by the Poudree in the title if you’re not a powder fan- it’s a muted, muffled effect, and not remotely dated.

Narciso EDP Poudree goes on with a flourish of white flowers: namely trusty jasmine and orange flower. There’s no creamy tuberose here, although it would have worked well. There’s a comforting slink of musk running alongside the feminine flora, and this is what resonates most for me. The rose peeks in, but doesn’t get much of a say. The base is comprised of vetiver, tonka, woods, and patchouli.

Mainly though, this is a big white floral, with sexy, musky overtones and a woody finish. It makes me feel like a proper grown up, as if I should do my nails and wear high heels before wearing it.

Narciso Eau de Parfum Poudree is exceptionally good and probably my favourite from The Fragrance Shop Discovery Club Box from whence it came. (It’s neck and neck with Stella McCartney POP.  Boxes are £5 each and sent quarterly. I would never have stumbled across this gem if it hadn’t been put under my nose. And that, my friends, is why I like Discovery Boxes.

The Fragrance Shop Discovery Club Box Giveaway and More!

Poudree

I have exciting news about this quarter’s Fragrance Shop Discovery Club Box. Not only is it a great selection of samples, but I have one to give away AND my very own discount code so that you can get one free when you subscribe. I feel properly famous now. I’ll probably be in Celebrity Big Brother next. (Day One.  Samantha heads straight for the kettle.  The other housemates have labelled her “boring.”)jimmycvhoo2

You may have correctly surmised by now that I am a huge fan of discovery boxes. Many a time have I stumbled across a fragrance that wasn’t even on my radar or my “Must Try” list and many a time has that fragrance ended up being a favourite. Discovery Boxes turn your head and whisper “I know you don’t think you’ll like this one, but have you actually tried it?” It’s also a great way to try new releases and new flankers without traipsing round endless shops wondering what your coat sleeves smell of after trying ten scents in one morning. (Guilty).

This month, the Fragrance Shop sent me a Discovery Club Box to see what I thought. I have been a proud subscriber since the scheme began, so now I have two.  As I often tell my sons “It’s not fair to have two when your brother’s got none.”  I am therefore giving one of them away. The contents are a mix of established classics and new launches. There’s three for him and four for her, but that’s just labels. In my opinion, anyone can wear anything.  There’s also a Fragrance Shop booklet containing discount vouchers on a full bottle of each scent sample in the box. Ill be reviewing some of them shortly so watch this space.

What’s in the Box?

Samples are between 1.5ml and 2ml. Here’s what’s in it:fragshopdiscbox16

The Perfume Society Scent With Love Discovery Box- Review and GIVEAWAY

scentwithlove

Enormous excitement here at IScent HQ as The Perfume Society has made me their blogger of the month. I knew I was a fan of theirs, and I am delighted to know that they are a fan of mine too. You can find their article about IScentYouADay right here.

Truly, I’m blushing all over the shop today.

It seems fitting then to review the latest Discovery Box I ordered last month. (There’s another coming soon- more of which anon.)

I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I’m a huge fan of The Perfume Society Discovery Boxes. Each box offers a carefully curated selection of perfume samples that would take even a sample hustler like me a good year and several cities to get under my own steam. Each box has a handy postcard with history, notes and discussion prompts. There’s usually a couple of beauty treats such as hand cream or nail polish too. It’s like getting a birthday present. So today I am reviewing the Perfume Society Scent With Love Discovery Box  and here’s what’s in it:

vanillamarblebottle

1. Agonist Vanilla Marble EDP

I recently reviewed this beauty (see link here) and would heartily recommend it to lovers of vanilla, and more importantly, those who are not, because Vanilla Marble gives you the rich black vanilla pod without the sugar. I thought I had seen enough Vanilla but this comes at it from a  different angle and it’s very addictive.

incredible bottle

2. Taylor Swift Incredible Things

With so many Grammys to arrange on her mantelpiece, I don’t know how Taylor Swift found the time to collaborate on Incredible Things. The nice thing about this latest fragrance from her is that it didn’t take the most obvious route down fragrant Celebrity Street. There’s suede and vetiver that lifts this above the competition, and at a great price too. See my earlier review here.

elie saab rose

3. Elie Saab Rose Couture

I’ve yet to smell anything by Elie Saab that I didn’t like. Rose Couture is no exception. The orange blossom that is used so seamlessly in the original, is coupled with roses upon roses and rounded off with sandalwood and patchouli. This is a terrific scent for anytime of day. It manages to be both sophisticated and accessible. If you’re a sucker for a good rose, you can’t go wrong.

cherry blossom

4. Shay and Blue London English Cherry Blossom

I fell hard for this, which surprised me as I can usually take or leave cherry blossom. My glowing review is here so you can see for yourself how much I liked it. Perfect for Spring.

moschino fresh couture

5. Moschino Fresh Couture

I loved this one too: a post ironic take on the laundry fresh accord, but made invigorating with citrus and pretty flowers, and with a flourish of white patchouli. You can read my review here.

narciso rod

6. Narciso Rodriguez For Her EDP

I have long been a lover of this one. See my review of the EDT here. It comes as no surprise to find that the two legendary noses behind it were none other than Christine Nagel and His Majesty Francis Kurkdjian. If you haven’t yet tried it, this sample will be a portal.

sex goddess

7. 4160 Tuesdays Sex Goddess

I reviewed this one recently. You can find my review here. Sex Goddess comes from Sarah McCartney’s Crimes of Passion series and like the rest of the scents in the capsule collection, the ingredients and blending are, I believe, her best yet.

mure et musc

8. L’Artisan Parfumeur Mure et Musc

I was new to his classic but loved its combination of dark fruit- both sweet and bitter, combined with soft musk. Such a killer combination and yet so simple. You can read my review here.

i am juicy

9. Juicy Couture I Am Juicy

I Am Juicy is everything you want from the fruity floral genre. Raspberry and passion fruit segue into pretty sweet pea and roses, and its all rounded off with an amber-y musky finish. I even got a hint of rhubarb from it, which was very welcome.

aurelia

10. Beauty Treat One: Aurelia Probiotic Skincare Firm and Revitalise Dry Body Oil

I recently had an allergic reaction which left my hands dry like cracked desert earth. Soothing this on them was like finding an oasis. Scented with neroli and lavender and containing a shot of Vitamin E, my hands are starting to look normal again. It’s all organic too.

time bomb

11. Beauty Treat Two: Time Bomb Hand to Hand Combat Hand Cream.

This beautifully scented hand cream, has been just what I needed lately. Evidence? It’s now empty and I miss it. However, in the Discovery Box, on the Time Bomb postcard is a discount code for 30% off a full tube.

scented letter

Fragonard Soleil: The Sunny Side of The Street

Fragonard has yet to make a fragrance that disappoints me.  With consistently high quality, great packaging, good longevity and fair prices, it is to me, the perfect brand.  Fragonard Soleil is no exception.

From the name and the gold sun on the lid, you might expect something of the coconutty/sun cream genre, but in fact what you’re getting is a rather bold bouquet of white flowers that trip over themselves to make you smell impossibly feminine and pretty on a hot day.

My mini bottle

The strongest note to my nose is the Freesia.  Freesia sometimes gets lost in translation.  In fact, this initially reminded me of Avon Today, which opens similarly, but falls flat on its face not long afterwards (see my earlier review).  With Fragonard Soleil, the freesia opens quite dominantly and then the other white flower notes ( most notably orange flower) crowd in shortly afterwards, making this both rich and summery at the same time.

On hot skin, this is radiant.  I know because I wore it down the park yesterday and it was boiling, but I could smell those summer flowers drifting up to my nose from my forearms. NB I don’t put perfume on my wrists as I wash my hands a lot and it comes off, but on the front of my forearm?  Well that only gets washed once a day!

Fragonard Soleil allegedly beds down into sandalwood with an ambery finish, but I found that the orange flower, freesia, and slightly peppery wisteria just stayed put the whole time.  This is great on the beach and equally great in the bar afterwards.  Yes there are colognes to cool you down, but actually flowers like this  are sort of perfect on a hot day.

 Stockists

You can buy Fragonard Soleil from the Fragonard website ( one of the prettiest websites in the world! IMO) or from Marks and Spencer online or instore.

My 7ml splash bottle is from the Perfume Society Summer Scentsations Discovery Box.

Happy Valentine’s Day: This is My Special Treat

PerfumeSociety_valentine-copy-350x341

arlesienneHappy Valentine’s Day even if you’re not celebrating it.  Love doesn’t have to be romantic so I hope that you, dear reader, have someone to love and to love you in return today. Love is all you need. The Beatles were right.

Rather than focus on one fragrance today, I wanted to share my salacious wonderment at the arrival of another Discovery Box from the Perfume Society.

carven bottle

When I was younger, my late and much missed grandmother Nanna T, used to give me wonderful Christmas presents that consisted of a wicker basket with a hand sewn floral lining, which was then filled with goodies.

valeThis is the 1980s we are talking about so I would get for example,:  some bath pearls (remember them?), a sachet of Shaders and Toners (remember them too?), bath cubes (ditto!), and all manner of tiny treats.  I loved this gift above all others and have never forgotten it.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESSAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESSAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Fast forward to 2015 and I got  a similar thrill at opening my Love Scents Discovery Box from The Perfume Society. and here’s what was in it:

  1.  A tube of Love Heart sweets,
  2. A spray sample of L’Amour Lalique
  3. A spray sample of Carven L’Eau de Toilette
  4. A spray sample of Dear Rose I Love My Man
  5. A spray sample of Van Cleef and Arpels Rose Velours No 17785QY
  6. A 4ml splash bottle of 4160 Tuesdays The Sexiest Scent on the Planet Ever (IMHO)
  7. A spray sample of Signorina Eleganza by Salvatore Ferragamo
  8. A spray sample of Artemisia by Penhaligons
  9. A 4ml splash bottle of Valentino Uomo
  10. A spray sample of Roads Cloud 9 Parfum
  11. A boxed splash bottle of L’Occitane L’Arlesienne Eau de toilette.
  12. A 10ml tube of L’Occitane Roses et Reines hand cream
  13. A spray sample of Juliette Has a Gun Lady Vengeance

There is a rose theme running throughout and I am particularly blown away by the high calibre of the samples included. Instead of focussing on one fragrance today,  I shall be working my way through this delightful box bit by biSAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESt, and hotly anticipating the next one.  It’s like getting a little birthday present, and speaking of which, these make perfect perfume-y gifts.
